Some of the politicians were abducted by the rebels for several days in protest against alleged police abuses.
Thousands have died in Maoist campaigns across central and southern India in the past 30 years
The Maoists say they are fighting for more rights for indigenous people in at least five states, including Bihar, which has a reputation as India's most lawless state.

The incident took place in Nawada district, when more than 200 rebels attacked security forces deployed at a religious function.
Three others were injured. The rebels took away a number of police weapons.

Nigeria's gas profits 'up in smoke'

"Sometimes you can't tell whether it's the dawn breaking or the flame," says activist Vivian Bellonwu, the frustration clear in her voice, after seeing nothing change despite the 1 January target.
"It's a history of shifting goal posts, missing deadline after deadline".
Everyone agrees gas flaring wastes billions of dollars in useful gas.
Campaigners say it world of warcraft causes huge environmental damage and according to doctors, it is responsible for causing chronic health problems among people who live in the Delta.
But the government and the oil companies are blaming each other.
"It's all insincerity from the government and the companies -they're destroying lives and livelihoods," says Mrs Bellonwu.

Blighted
Nigeria flares the second largest volume of gas of any producer, behind Russia.

Communities who live near Nigeria's more than 1,000 onshore well heads are blighted by gas plumes that rise from the ground, spreading toxic smoke and chemicals over their farms.
Social Action, the organisation Mrs Bellonwu works for, cheap runescape gold has been representing the communities who live near the many gas flares that light up the watery marshland and mangrove swamps of the Delta.
"When you approach a gas flare, the first thing you notice is the heat, the villages around the flares are all very hot."
The flames also light up the sky 24 hours a day, and the noise that comes from them is a continuous roar like a jet aircraft taking off.
She says doctors have reported higher rates of cancer, children with asthma and a suggestion the burning gasses may be making residents infertile.
"The smoke in some places is overpowering. It can't be good."
Royal Dutch Shell, the largest operator of onshore wells, has not commented on the claims that gas flaring affects the health of local residents.
Not profitable
Nigeria's onshore oil production started in the 1950s.
As the oil comes up through the well head, it emerges with little bubbles of gas.

But until the 1980s with no way to store or transport it, there was little market for natural gas produced in Nigeria.
The operating oil companies simply burned it off.
Since then the price of gas world of warcraft gold has risen, transportation techniques have developed and drilling technology has improved allowing more oil, and consequently more gas, to be drawn through a single well.
Now experts believe Nigeria is burning billions of dollars of gas from its aging wells, letting potential profits go up in smoke.
Even more ironically, campaigners say, the biggest need for that gas is in Nigeria.
Nigeria is in the grip of a power generation crisis and the gas runescape gold that is being burned could go a long way towards providing the electricity the country desperately needs in order to develop its economy.
Blame game
The government and the oil companies agree they want to end gas flaring.
Shell says it has reduced the amount of gas flared by more than 30% since 2000.

Shell officials say it is the government's fault that gas flaring still happens.
A lot more pipelines would have to be built to collect all the gas.
The government isn't keeping up cheap wow gold its end of the funding agreements, preventing more investment, they say.
Also the government can't guarantee oil workers' security in a region patrolled by armed gangs who kidnap oil company employees.
The government oil regulators seem unable to get tough with the companies who operate the wells.
It says it can't shut down wells to force them to collect the gas without taking oil wells out of production, losing valuable profit.
The minister of state for petroleum told the BBC that while it is true the national oil corporation has a controlling stake in the joint drilling ventures, the responsibility to stop the practice lay with the oil companies.
"The operating companies, they are the operators, and clearly they have a responsibility to operate in an environmental way," said Odein Ajumogobia.
Two deadlines have been set and passed without making any difference.
Fresh deadlines?
Mr Ajumogobia said he hopes the problem will come a step closer to being resolved in the next three months.
Because oil cartel Opec has ordered Nigeria to make cuts to its production as part of a global attempt to lift oil prices, the government might be able to take some wells out of production to be fitted with gas collecting equipment, Mr Ajumogobia said.

They want to start with the wells producing the most gas relative to the amount of oil available.
But oil and gas industry analysts are sceptical about the government's ability to carry out the plan.
"The ministry could make the plan succeed if they worked systematically and really got tough with the companies," says Alexandra Gillies of Cambridge University, who is researching Nigeria's oil and gas industry.
"This kind of decisive action in regulating the industry is what's needed, but it hasn't fared well in the past."

Germany 1-2 England

It was a perfect end to England's 2008 and they can look forward to 2009 with considerable optimism.

Terry headed in Stewart Downing's free-kick after earlier being involved in a defensive mix-up with Scott Carson that handed Germany an equaliser.
The pair failed to deal with a hopeful ball forward and German substitute Patrick Helmes pounced to score.
Matthew Upson had put a dominant England ahead when he poked home a corner from the impressive Downing.
The win made it five in a row for Fabio Capello's side on a night where almost everything went right for the England coach.
With a host of first-team stars missing Capello took a risk in opting for a youthful side. And his brave move was rewarded with an impressive performance that was full of vigour and some much-improved displays from a number of his fringe players.

From the kick-off the pace of debutant Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jermain Defoe caused problems for a German defence short on mobility.
The surprise pairing seemed to strike up an understanding and they cheap wow gold almost caught out the German offside trap within two minutes of the kick off.
England's 7,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium were in good voice as the away side had a virtual monopoly on possession in the early stages.
Downing enjoyed one of his better games for his country on the left wing and Shaun Wright-Phillips was full of running and invention down the right, while Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry dominated the midfield.
Wright-Phillips was just off the mark with a left-foot shot before Downing provided the cross that saw England take the lead.
His corner was horribly misjudged by German keeper Rene Adler and Upson reacted well to pounce on the loose ball.

England keeper David James provided a couple of worrying moments in first dealing with a testing backpass and then when he failed to collect a Piotr Trochowski cross.
He was more convincing in punching away a curling free-kick from Trochowski, while a Heiko Westermann header from a Bastian Schweinsteiger free-kick failed to test the Pompey stopper.
England could have had a second before the break when Downing unleashed a left-foot shot that Adler was at full stretch to keep out, and Wright-Phillips almost steered in the rebound.

England lost Defoe at half-time after he picked up a knock, with the in-form Darren Bent replacing him.
The Tottenham forward should have put England 2-0 ahead when he was sent through on goal by Barry, but after rounding substitute keeper Tim Wiese he lost his footing in his atAdd Imagetempts to slide the ball into the empty net.

Within minutes Germany were level through Helmes, but it was a goal that should never have been conceded.
Terry attempted to shepherd a hopeful ball back to Carson but with neither England player dealing with the situation, the German substitute Helmes stole in to knock it through Carson's legs before sidefooting home.
The goal could have destroyed England's new-found confidence but they continued to press for a second goal.
Agbonlahor was agonisingly wide after showing his marker another clean pair of heels and Downing continued to provide a regular supply line down the left flank.

Wright-Phillips struck the post with a stunning strike world of warcraft gold, but England were not to be denied when Terry showed great determination to head home Downing's floated free-kick from deep.

Camera phone capture

Sian captured an image on her mobile phone camera while travelling along the A55. Initially she thought it could be a UFO but her father has since been in touch.

The photos were taken with my mobile phone whilst travelling in the back of my parents' car. We were between Rhuallt Hill and Halkyn on the A55 travelling east. I was pointing the cameraphone in a southerly direction towards the sun. I was taking the pictures to try my new phone out, which I had for Christmas, and could not see the object in the sky with my naked eye because the sun was too bright. There was no dirt on the car window.

Obama sweeps to victory as first black president

Obama won California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin, guildwars gold.

Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself. "Change has come," he told a jubilant hometown Chicago crowd.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Iowa and more. He captured Virginia and Indiana, too, the first candidate of his party in 44 years to win either.

Obama's election capped a meteoric rise — from mere state senator to president-elect in four years.
Spontaneous celebrations erupted from Atlanta to New York wow gold and Philadelphia as word of Obama's victory spread. Supporters filled Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.

In his first speech as victor, to well over 100,000 people in Grant Park in Chicago, Obama catalogued the challenges ahead. "The greatest of a lifetime," he said, "two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."

He added, world of warcraft gold "There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face."
McCain called his former rival to concede defeat — and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. "The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona.
President Bush added his congratulations from the White House, where his tenure runs out on Jan. 20. "May God bless whoever wins tonight," he had told dinner guests earlier.

Obama, in his speech, invoked the words of Lincoln, recalled Martin Luther King Jr., and seemed to echo John F. Kennedy.
"So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder," he said.

He and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as president and vice president on Jan. 20, 2009. McCain remains in the Senate runescape gold.
Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, returns to Alaska as governor after a tumultuous debut on the national stage.

He will move into the Oval Office as leader of a country that is almost certainly in recession, and fighting two long wars, one in Iraq, the other in Afghanistan.
The popular vote was close — 51.7 percent to 47 percent with 84 percent of all U.S. precincts tallied — but not the count in the Electoral College wow gold cheap, where it mattered most.

There, Obama's audacious decision to contest McCain in states that hadn't gone Democratic in years paid rich dividends.
Shortly after 2 a.m. in the East, The Associated Press count showed Obama with 349 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed for victory. McCain had 144 after winning states that comprised the normal Republican base, including Texas and most of the South.

By comparison, Bush won the White House twice, and never tallied more than 286 electoral votes.
Four states remained unsettled — Georgia, Missouri, Montana and North Carolina. All voted for Bush in 2004.
Interviews with voters suggested that almost six in 10 women maplestory mesos were backing Obama nationwide, while men leaned his way by a narrow margin. Just over half of whites supported McCain, giving him a slim advantage in a group that Bush carried overwhelmingly in 2004.

The results of the AP survey were based on a preliminary partial sample of nearly 10,000 voters in Election Day polls and in telephone interviews over the past week for early voters. Obama has said his first order of presidential business will be to tackle the economy. He has also pledged to withdraw most U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months.

In Washington, the Democratic leaders of Congress celebrated.
"It is not a mandate for a party or ideology but a mandate for change," said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
Said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California: "Tonight the American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change in America."

Democrats also acclaimed Senate successes by former Gov. Mark Warner in Virginia, Rep. Tom Udall in New Mexico and Rep. Mark Udall in Colorado. All won seats left open by Republican retirements.
In New Hampshire cheap wow gold, former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen defeated Republican Sen. John Sununu in a rematch of their 2002 race, and Sen. Elizabeth Dole fell to Democrat Kay Hagan in North Carolina.

Biden won a new term in Delaware, a seat he will resign before he is sworn in as vice president.
The Senate's Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, survived a scare in Kentucky.

In Georgia, Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss hoped to avoid a December runoff. His was one of four races that were uncalled. The others were in Alaska, Minnesota and Oregon, and in each, lotro Republican incumbents hoped to eke out victories.
The Democrats piled up gains in the House, as well.

They defeated eight Republican incumbents, including 22-year veteran Chris Shays in Connecticut, and picked up nine more seats where GOP lawmakers had retired.
At least four Democrats lost their seats, including Florida Rep.lord of rings online gold Tim Mahoney, turned out of office after admitting to two extramarital affairs while serving his first term in Florida. In Louisiana, Democratic Rep. Don Cazayoux lost the seat he had won in a special election six months ago.

The resurgent Democrats also elected a governor in one of the nation's traditional bellwether states when Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon won his race.
An estimated 187 million voters were registered, and in an indication of interest in the battle for the White House, 40 million or so had already voted as Election Day dawned.

Obama sought election as one of the youngest presidents, and one of the least experienced in national political affairs.
That wasn't what set the Illinois senator apart, though — neither from his rivals nor from the other men who had served as president since the nation's founding more than two centuries ago. A black man, he confronted a previously unbreakable barrier as he campaigned on twin themes of change and hope in uncertain times.
McCain, a prisoner of war during Vietnam, a generation older than his rival at 72, was making his second try for the White House, following his defeat in the battle for the GOP nomination in 2000.

A conservative, he stressed his maverick's streak. And although a Republican, he did what he could to separate himself from an unpopular president.
For the most part, the two presidential candidates and their running mates, Biden and Republican Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, spent weeks campaigning in states that went for Bush four years ago.
McCain and Obama each won contested nominations — the Democrat outdistancing former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton — and promptly set out to claim the mantle of change.
